Show Notes

I received a DM the other day from a woman who was looking to have her implants removed, but was contemplating having children.  She wanted to know whether to have her implants removed now, or finish having children first.  This show is my answer to those questions.

So you have breast implants, you're tired of them, but are looking to have children and you want to know whether you should get your breast implants out before having kids or after having kids. And I guess this is a question that really comes down to your ultimate goals and why you're looking to have your implants removed.

How much do you dislike them and what kind of issues are you willing to tolerate around the ability to breastfeed and have children. I think one of the things to think about when you're answering this question is What your ultimate goals with having children are, are you interested in breastfeeding?

Because if so, then taking implants out and likely needing a breast lift, because your breast tissue and skin will get stretched out with having implants and you will likely need a lift to make them look decent after you have your implants removed, that may impact your ability to breastfeed.

And so if that is important, then waiting makes a lot of sense.

If on the other hand, you feel like your implants are causing problems and we're not going to get into the whole breast implant illness thing here, but if you feel like your implants are causing problems, then having them removed before you have children, is probably a good idea.

I've had patients in both camps, one group of patients who have gotten breast implants and then immediately turned around and gotten pregnant because they thought they weren't able to have children and then had breast implants and got pregnant .

I've also had other patients who have had breast implants who have had trouble having children. We've removed their implants and coincidentally they were able to conceive. So it really comes down to a personal choice, but I think things to really think about are how bad your implants are bothering you.

What problems that you're attributing to your implants that are you looking to solve? And then in terms of breastfeeding and cosmetics, what is the best result that you're hoping for. If you do want to breastfeed, then doing anything to change your breast right before trying to get pregnant probably is not the best idea.

But if that's not an issue for you, then having your implants out, it seems to be fine. So long story short, there are a number of factors to answer that question. And it largely is a question that you need to answer. in conjunction with your surgeon and discuss your specific options because everybody is different.
