Can a Tummy Tuck Correct Diastasis Recti?

Knoxville Tummy TuckAs any mom can attest to, pregnancy is an amazing but painful experience with often permanent effects on their body. A very common issue after childbirth is something called diastasis recti. Pregnancy stretches the skin and muscles on the stomach to such a degree that the muscles on the left and right sides can separate. When this happens, it can leave excess skin and a bulge on the tummy that no amount of exercise can improve. Diastasis recti leaves moms wishing there was a way for them to get their pre-pregnancy figure back. Which is why many mothers turn to plastic surgery–including the tummy tuck.

Knoxville moms have a couple of options when it comes to fixing diastasis recti. What is Diastasis Recti?

It’s sometimes called the pregnancy problem that no one talks about. To put it simply, as the belly swells during pregnancy, the abdominal muscles and tissues will thin out and stretch to accommodate the growing uterus. After birth, these tissues usually return to their normal size. But in about two-thirds of moms, they don’t. This leaves the two sides of your abdominal muscles separated. The result is a permanent bulge in the belly and excess skin. Unfortunately, no amount of exercise or sit-ups will make it go away.

Can You Fix Diastasis Recti with a Tummy Tuck?

Knoxville women have a couple of options for repairing their diastasis recti. The first is to undergo surgery just to repair the diastasis recti. During this procedure, the surgeon will use sutures to pull the muscles back together.

But another option that many moms prefer is to get a tummy tuck. Knoxville moms can then repair not just the muscle separation, but also remove the excess skin. During the tummy tuck procedure, Dr. Hall will use sutures to tighten the abdominal muscles and tissues. But he will also remove excess skin around the belly button and in the lower abdomen–a common issue with diastasis recti. On top of that, Dr. Hall can also use liposuction to reshape the tummy and give it a more youthful form during the tummy tuck.
