What is Botox?

Patients can get Botox injections to certain locations on their face to smooth out any wrinkles that make them look older and tired. But how does Botox actually accomplish that?

Botox itself is a highly-processed form of the botulinum toxin. Botox is injected into the muscles of the face that pull the skin together to form wrinkles. Botox temporarily paralyzes those muscles so that they can't contract and create wrinkles. The result is smoother skin without the wrinkles. The Botox treatment usually lasts for several months before patients need to get the injections again.

Can You Become "Immune" to Botox?

Patients that get Botox will, by and large, not develop any kind of resistance to Botox. Because Botox is a form of a toxin produced by a bacteria, the body can sometimes develop an immune response to the injections. This will cause the body to break down the Botox injections quickly so that they are no longer effective. However, this only happens in about .5% of patients and usually only after patients have been getting regular treatment for around 10 years.

Even if you currently have a resistance, patients can switch to a different neurotoxin (such as Dysport) and get terrific results.

Botox is a very safe, fast, and highly effective treatment option for facial wrinkles that is also relatively painless. Patients that want to look younger, rested, and more confident can get beautiful results with Botox. To be sure that you get incredible results from your Botox treatment, have the procedure done by a board-certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Hall and his team have years of experience with facial anatomy and with Botox injections. He is meticulous and precise in all of his Botox treatments to make sure that he targets the specific muscles that are causing your unique wrinkles.
