How Soon After Breast Augmentation Surgery Can You Exercise?

Breast Augmentation and Different Types of Exercise

Any well balanced fitness routine will consist of a combination of both cardiovascular and weight training, and these forms of exercise should definitely be resumed with care after an augmentation. Other forms of exercise, though, that you might not think of as being as strenuous should also be carefully considered to help preserve the results of your procedure. Let’s take a look at the major exercise types and tips for resuming each:

  • Cardio – Typically, this includes outdoor running, cycling, and the use of various cardiovascular machines. Because of the nature of a breast augmentation, the key here is minimizing impact and motions that would cause your breasts to bounce. That said, elliptical trainers (without using the arm handles), stationary bikes, and stair climbers are the best way to ease back into this type of exercise.
  • Weight training – With weight training, the greater the weight you use, the more your muscles are strained with each repetition. When resuming weight training, starting with loads that are considerably lighter than you may be used to is advisable. Putting too much strain on your recovering muscles could cause them to heal incorrectly and alter the final resting position of your new breasts. This is even more important if you and I choose a technique that places an implant underneath the pectoralis muscles of the chest – some of the largest and most frequently used muscles in the body.
  • Stretching – Many people don’t typically think of stretching as being particularly strenuous, but after a breast augmentation, just like weight training, deep stretching like that involved with Yoga, Pilates, and other popular low-impact forms of exercise can have adverse results if you aren’t careful. Start back with easier versions of routines you’ve done in the past to allow your body to heal properly.

Timing Is Everything

Before you get worried that you won’t be able to move naturally for months post-procedure, let us set your mind at ease. Most women are able to resume normal activities within 24 hours. In order to ensure the best possible results, I recommend that you wait 6 weeks to resume exercise routines and other strenuous activities, but we can discuss other alternatives that can get you back to exercising sooner.
