Incision Options for Breast Augmentation

Plastic surgeons offer several different incision techniques. Which one is right for you will depend entirely on your conversation with Dr. Hall during your Knoxville plastic surgery consultations. Each incision technique has its own unique pros and cons.

The Transaxillary Incision

This incision is one of the least common even though it delivers what many consider to be the least visible scar. The transaxillary incision is made in the armpit. From there, Dr. Hall inserts the saline or silicone implant into the breast pocket. The scar is virtually invisible and would require someone inspecting your armpit to find it. While many patients believe the transaxillary incision is only available for saline implants, this is not the case. Silicone implants of all sizes and types can be inserted through the transaxillary incision.

On top of that, with a transaxillary incision, there is virtually no risk of losing nipple sensation or the ability to breastfeed in the future. There is also usually no contact with the breast tissue.

However, the transaxillary incision does have its drawbacks. The surgery is slightly more complex and requires the use of an endoscope (a small surgical camera). For women with tubular breasts or other complex breast augmentation, women may require a different incision approach.

The Inframammary Incision

With an inframammary incision, the incision is made in the inframammary fold, which is the crease of skin underneath the breast. This is, by far, the most common incision for breast augmentation surgery. There is some risk of losing nipple sensation, but it is much lower than other options like the periareolar incision. Also, breastfeeding is still possible with this incision approach.

Also, with an inframammary incision, any reoperations that need to be made, such as for capsular contracture, the surgeon can usually use this incision again instead of making a new one. Most bathing suits and bras will cover the incisions, and even when unclothed, most people will not notice this scar from breast augmentation.
