What Causes Rippling on Breast Augmentation Implants?

Women that decide to undergo a breast augmentation have a wide range of issues that they need to sort through. Dr. Hall helps his patients make the best possible choice for themselves, and one of the biggest concerns for our patients is rippling.

Regarding breast augmentation, rippling is when the folds in the outside of the implant can be seen through the skin. It looks like little ripples or waves. Obviously, our patients want to avoid this unnatural look.

Rippling is usually caused when the skin and breast tissue over the implant is very thin over the top of the breast implant. This can be made worse with saline implants or using larger breast implants. It is also more common when implants are in the subglandular (over the muscle) position. Women with thin layers of breast tissue can still get phenomenal results, but they'll need their implants placed under the chest muscle (submuscular placement) or will need to add fat grafting to their breast augmentation to enhance their results and prevent rippling later on.

How to Prevent Rippling with Breast Augmentation Implants

Women still have some options that they can use to prevent rippling with their implants.

• Use silicone - Traditional silicone tend to ripple less than saline, and the new cohesive gel implants (also known as "gummy bear" implants) tend to have less rippling.
• Use smooth implants - Silicone implants come in "smooth" and "textured" options. Round, textured implants tend to show more rippling.
• Go under the muscle - Dr. Hall spends a great deal of time talking with patients about every aspect of the procedure. Rippling is a concern for Dr. Hall as well, and he will discuss the option of using a submuscular placement if there is insufficient breast tissue to cover the implant.
• Stay conservative - Large breast implants have greater risks of showing ripples. Using a smaller implant could help avoid this issue.
• Fat grafting - Use your own fat to add tissue over the implant at the time of your breast augmentation.
