W hen you come to this page, the last thing you probably want to read is a description of me touting my professional achievements and bragging on myself by writing in the third person. So, I’m not going to bother.
Instead, I’m going to tell you a little bit about how I got here and why I chose to do what I do, and hopefully that will give you better insight into who I am.
I grew up in Knoxville, where my father spent almost his entire career in the private practice of cancer surgery after starting the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in the late 1970’s. As a child, I loved listening to him talk about his job, and I loved the passion he had for his work and for his patients. From an early age, I knew I wanted to be a doctor.
The path to get to where I am now was a long one. After graduating from The Webb School of Knoxville, I spent 8 years in North Carolina, 7 years in Texas, and a year in Palo Alto, CA before I began my career in plastic surgery. I only half-jokingly told my nephew I finished the 28th grade after I finished my fellowship at Stanford. Until May of 2015, I was in private practice in Houston, TX.
As my two daughters began to get older, my wife and I got tired of “big city” life – the traffic, the crowds, and the inconvenience of everyday living. We got tired of my 13-mile drive to my office taking an hour or more. I got tired of my patients having to pay $10-20 to park when they came to see me.
My wife and I decided to move to Knoxville because it had all the things we wanted for our lives and for our family – mountains, lakes, good schools, friendly people, and a more relaxed way of life. As amateur “foodies”, my wife and I do, however, miss all the wonderful restaurants in Houston…of all the places we’ve ever lived, the restaurants there were truly outstanding. However, my home, my heart, and my family are in East Tennessee.
I’ll start by saying that I love my job. I chose to be a plastic surgeon because it is the most rewarding specialty in medicine. I have the opportunity to take care of anyone who comes to see me – from the premature baby to the great-grandparents, and everyone in between.
I get to change lives with every operation or procedure that I do, whether it is repairing a cleft lip, reconstructing a breast after a cancer operation, fixing a crooked nose, or erasing wrinkles with Botox. With my extra training in craniofacial surgery, I also have the chance to change the lives of children, which is an extra special part of my practice. There is nothing more powerful than knowing that in a few hours, you can make a positive impact on the entire life (80+ YEARS!!) of another human being.
T his last point – being able to change the course of another person’s entire life for the better (and from the very beginning) – lays at the foundation of what being a doctor is. It is why I get up every day.
It is also the reason I travel internationally on surgical missions. Overseas mission trips are exhausting, they are uncomfortable, and they are hard. However, to know after a week of surgery that I have personally changed the lives of twenty individual children and their families is a feeling that is difficult to describe, and without actually going on one of those trips, it’s difficult to explain. I would love it if you all had the opportunity to experience it, and encourage you to volunteer your time on one of these trips if you can.
That said, I realize that most people will never have the chance to experience a medical mission trip. However, I have come up with a way to allow everyone that has “joined” our practice family to share in the joy that comes with that kind of service. We call this program “For You. For All.”
For every cosmetic procedure that I perform – from lesion removals to filler and Botox to surgery – a portion of the fee will be donated to charity organizations dedicated to improving the lives of children who otherwise would go without the surgical care that they need to live happy, fulfilled lives. It’s my way of giving – not only to those children, but to you. And every year, you’ll be able to see the impact you have on other children’s lives, simply by being a part of ours.
Hopefully, now that you know a little more about me than you did a minute ago. If you want to know more about our fantastic office staff, please click on the link below.
