K ybella is, essentially, a purified form of a chemical that is found in our intestinal tract. It’s job in the “real world” (ie: your intestines) is to help break down the fats that we eat to smaller particles to aid in their digestion. When that chemical – deoxycholic acid – is purified and injected into fatty deposits under your chin, it breaks down the fat that is present there for your body to absorb and get rid of. In the FDA trials, it was so effective in getting rid of fat that the FDA cleared it for use under the chin – a very cosmetically sensitive area.
In the FDA trials, patients underwent a series of treatments with Kybella – about one a month for 3-4 months. The treatments are very quick (about 15 minutes) and, with the addition of a light topical anesthetic, almost painless.
You can expect some mild redness immediately after the injection, and the area under the chin will be slightly swollen for a few days after the treatment.
