Not Your Mother’s Botox

I’m 23 and have already started botox. Yes-you read that right.

There are so many misconceptions when it comes to botox and fillers, whether you’re 24 or 54. My idea of botox prior to being educated, was that you only got botox over the age of 50 when you tend to have more visible wrinkles and skin concerns. I also thought that if you got fillers, you would instantly look like Kylie Jenner and there would be no turning back. I’m happy to report that I was completely wrong, and am so excited to share my personal experience with you! So what exactly is botox and what does it do? Botox is a drug prepared from the bacterial toxin botulin.  It is used medically to treat certain muscular conditions and cosmetically to remove wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing the facial muscles that cause them. If you’ve ever heard friends say their face feels “frozen” after receiving a botox treatment, that’s because it paralyzes those muscles to keep wrinkles from forming!

As far as wrinkles go, that’s currently not the biggest concern for me because of my age. However, I can already tell because of my expressions and oval face shape where those lines will most likely be the worst (I’m talking to you smile lines and crows feet!). My favorite way of explaining to others why I do botox at my age, is that it’s very similar to a fresh sheet of paper. My skin right now might be fresh and smooth, but ultimately it will fade and wrinkle over time. If that fresh sheet of paper is preserved and well maintained before it has had a chance to wrinkle, I’m more likely to be able to preserve a somewhat youthful appearance and age gracefully! I think that’s something we can all get behind!

Now on to my actual appointment! It can be a little scary to think about someone touching your face with a needle. We all hope for the best result and for nothing to go wrong! Luckily, when you go to a very well-trained professional, you can put your mind at ease and look forward to a better you! Both Dr. Jason Hall and Brooke, our PA, do Botox injections in our office.  After discussing your concerns, either one of them will create a custom injection plan for you that will achieve your goals.  Brooke took her time evaluating my concerns and had me make a few faces to show where I express the most. She thoroughly explained to me what she was doing and why she was injecting certain areas, and I was so excited to move forward with treatment! Each treatment plan is tailored specifically to each patient, but personally I wanted to target my crows feet and glabella (those super flattering lines in the middle of your eyebrows that look like an 11). Brooke used 12 units of botox between those two areas and it was over within just a few short minutes! As far as the pain goes, botox feels even less painful than a finger prick. It’s such a tiny needle and I barely felt a thing! For the great results I received, I can tolerate a short moment of discomfort any day! Normally, it can take around 2-3 days or up to two weeks for the botox to work its magic but everyone is different. I was so happy with my super natural, but noticeable results. Every time I smile now, my eyes have a much softer and smoother appearance and it’s a great feeling to know that I’m already ahead of the game in lessening those wrinkles for the future!

It was such a subtle difference that you don’t realize the changes until you see my before and after pictures! You can really tell around my eyes and how relaxed they look when I smile now. I love the soft appearance it gives! Whether you’re my age and looking to prevent deep wrinkles, or you’re double my age and just looking to turn back the clock, we can give you the natural results you’re looking for here at Knoxville Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery! The next time someone looks at me in shock for starting botox at my age and says, “but you don’t have wrinkles!”. I can now say, “I know! And I won’t next year either!”.

Here’s to aging gracefully!
